Even though your toddler will eventually lose their baby teeth, it is very important for you to keep them clean and healthy to avoid future dental problems. Even before their teeth comes in it is important to keep your child’s gums clean. When they start to get their teeth, get a toddler toothbrush and appropriate toothpaste. Our fave is Jack n’ Jill! Then model how to brush your teeth. Label all of the necessary items as you go along and talk about each step. You will see that soon your child will try to do exactly what you’re doing (e.g. – squeezing the toothpaste on, bringing the toothbrush to their mouth, etc.). You will need to help them take the cap off the toothpaste and brush back and forth at first, but they will get the hang of it in no time!
And don’t forget to make it a positive experience. Have it be part of your child’s everyday routine (e.g. – right before bed). Sing a song while you brush, praise them for trying, give them a high 5 or sticker at the end, etc. Dental hygiene is very important so you want brushing to be easy and a desirable activity. Once you think your child is ready schedule their first dentist appointment too. Now let’s get brushing!
