At this point your child is imitating gestures such as giving a kiss, waving, etc. An important and very meaningful gesture is shaking their head no to express dislike and nodding their head yes to show they like something!
Communicating no usually comes first especially during mealtime as you all know! ☺ If you find that your child is not yes shaking their head no, they may just be pushing away items with their hand or crying. The best thing to do is model the action you want to see from them! Simply just shake your head no while saying “no”. Negation is very important since you want to be able to know when your child does not want something instead of guessing.
Targeting nodding yes is great skill to work on as well since communicating interests will help you gauge what your child likes. At first anticipate what your child is into and create opportunities. Ask them “Do you like this book/toy/food?” to get a “yes” response. Once again model nodding your head up and down when he or she expresses approval. Video modeling is also very helpful to teach yes and no!
