6 Months – Onto Crawling!

Around this time your baby is taking the gradual steps to get crawling!  We got our hands on an awesome PowerPoint written by a physical therapist Julie Wattenberg.  Here are some amazing tips on how to encourage gross motor development in the 6-9 month range!

Your child will prefer to be on their stomach or sitting nowadays so place toys on their side instead of in front of them to stimulate lateral movement.

Carry them upright so that your child can hold on to you.  When you pick up your child rotate them to a sitting position each time.

Using a ball, have them sit and hold their pelvis for improved trunk control and to demand more activation.  Also using a ball, put them on their stomach and have the ball move forward so they can lift their head while going toward the ground to reach a motivating toy.  Using a foam roller or your lap, have them walk on their hands.  Have them practice going into a 4-point position (crawling position) lifting their bottom off the floor and putting weight on their arms.
