When I’m asked advice on what to get infants I always suggest cause & effect toys. Not only are they motivating, but they teach children if I do something then something happens in return. Children begin to realize that they too can have an effect on the world even it is as simple as making something light up or all of a sudden hearing a familiar tune! Many of the toys we will list below involve some sort of repetitive action, which can appear boring to us, but that is how our children learn – through repeated exposure and practice! As they are playing with the items give them the actions that go along with it. For example, if it is a Curious George Jack-in-the-Box, give them the action word “turn” as they learn to turn the knob. It also teaches problem solving by figuring out the best way to open, close, slide, etc. And if they cannot do it independently, encourage your children to vocalize, gesture, or ask for help. And speech aside, cause and effect toys are excellent for working on fine motor skills and eye-hand coordination. Here are our top picks below!
